Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest and most biologically diverse protected forests in Kerala, located in Thrissur district amidst the scenic Western Ghats. Established in 1958, the sanctuary covers an area of approximately 125 square kilometres, making it the second oldest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. Situated in the catchment areas of the Peechi and Vazhani Dams, the sanctuary is renowned for its evergreen forests, rich biodiversity, picturesque reservoirs, trekking trails, boating experiences, and breathtaking hill viewpoints. The sanctuary forms part of the Palappilly–Nelliampathy forest ecosystem and shares its northern boundary with Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary, together creating a vast protected landscape that supports a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. The forests consist of tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous vegetation, providing habitat for over 50 species of orchids, rare medicinal plants, teak, rosewood, bamboo, and numerous endemic tree species. Wildlife enthusiasts visiting the sanctuary have opportunities to spot Asian elephants, Indian gaurs, sambar deer, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boars, leopards, jungle cats, sloth bears, and occasionally tigers.
