Situated on the route to the famous Athirappilly Waterfalls, Thumboormuzhi attracts thousands of visitors every year, including families, nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, and eco-tourists. The scenic surroundings, peaceful atmosphere, and well-developed visitor facilities make it one of the must-visit attractions in central Kerala.
The highlight of Thumboormuzhi is its beautiful check dam built across the Chalakudy River, offering breathtaking views of the flowing water, lush forests, and surrounding hills of the Western Ghats. The calm reservoir, landscaped gardens, and cool breeze create a relaxing environment where visitors can spend hours enjoying nature. The area is particularly popular for family picnics, photography, sightseeing, and leisurely walks along the riverbank. The well-maintained gardens and children's park further enhance the destination's appeal for visitors of all ages.
One of the major attractions is the largest butterfly garden in Kerala, which is home to more than 140 species of butterflies in their natural habitat. The garden has been carefully designed with nectar-rich flowering plants and host plants that attract butterflies throughout the year. Visitors can observe colourful species such as the Southern Birdwing, Lemon Butterfly, Common Rose, Light Blue Tiger, and Dark Blue Tiger fluttering freely among the gardens. The butterfly park also serves as an educational centre promoting biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness.
Another iconic attraction is the 210-metre hanging bridge that connects Thumboormuzhi with Ezhattumugham Prakriti Gramam (Nature Village). Walking across the suspension bridge offers spectacular panoramic views of the Chalakudy River, the dam, dense forests, and the surrounding mountains. The bridge has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Thrissur district and provides visitors with an unforgettable experience amidst nature.
